First Things First

We all know that I like order and therefore always post chronologically.  BUT, this time I am abandoning posts that should come first to share what happened yesterday.

Our morning started out just great.  We met some friends at 9:30AM for a little of this.
But, unfortunately by 10 o'clock this...
led to a LOT of inconsolable crying and a quick exit to seek medical attention (thank you to our friends for trying to help and even tying my shoes for me while I held Emily).  After much crying and adrenaline rushing, Emily was sound asleep...
and we waited to see him. (picture from 1 year visit)
That visit led to more wailing and Emily and I were soon off to this place...
for some of these.   (These were NOT pleasant.)
Then we were asked to wait a few minutes to make sure the films were all good...
and they weren't so we had to go back in for one more of these.
After finally leaving there we found some of this (food) in the car from Daddy who ran home before returning to work...
and shoved some in before going back to see Dr. R again.  We had to wait in an exam room for a little bit before finding out the results of the x-rays.
(note the position of the left arm... it never changed)
We were then told that the x-rays were negative and were sent here...
to pick them up and take them to him.
This cPNP (certified pediatric nurse practitioner - working under an orthopedist) named Paul was very sweet to Emily and explained what he thought the problem might be.  After reviewing everything he was going to do, he began to examine Emily.  She was laughing and talking to him... he definitely fits well in pediatrics.  He saved the best (read: absolute worst and some SERIOUS pain) for last.  After some loud cries, screams, and a small pop he crossed his fingers that all was better and left the room to give Emily some space for 5 minutes before coming back in to check if her pain/problem was resolved.  Within a minute of him leaving the room (REALLY, within ONE minute) Emily was doing these types of things with her left arm.
It was 4 o'clock in the afternoon and she hadn't moved it since 10 in the morning.
It was UNREAL and I was VERY thankful to have my little happy girl back twirling around the exam room yelling, "woo hoo, woo hoo."  Turns out she had "nursemaid's elbow," a dislocation of the elbow joint, and once he popped her radius back in position she was 100% better.   It was a long and sweaty day but ended well so that is all that matters.

And to prove that all is well, look at our sweet girl today...
fully using her left arm to guard from pictures. :)
This video from this morning will also alleviate any worries that she is sad and scarred from yesterday's events. (also featured in this video are her friends Cooper and Ben)

*This video, however, should not be interpreted to mean that I am not scarred. ;)

(This video shows you having tons of fun "surprising" the boys and playing around)

  1. On her last trip down the slide Emily's arm got caught underneath her. There was a strange sticky substance (meant to slow kids down I guess) on both of the slides that I haven't experienced before and it had Emily rolling and flipping on previous trips down (hence me sliding with her all but those three times). This substance caused enough friction when she reached it to wrench her arm further and resulted in the injury. I feel that it (the substance) was unnecessary and ultimately very unsafe for children of Emily's size and weight especially - she has had no issues with "sticky-less" slides in the past. Oh well... live and learn and never return. :)

  2. SOOO glad that Elimy is back to her normal happy self! And thank goodness for that "other Paul", I think he deserves a glowing review by Mama to his boss! :)

  3. Wow!! What an experience. So glad they didn't use the sticky substance when we went. I recognize those pants she was wearing that day. Sophia has the same ones. :) Glad she's back to being Emily!

  4. Holy cow! I was so worried as I was reading the post. What's up with the sticky stuff on the slide! I'm so glad it was not anything worse than this. I broken arm would have made for an un-fun summer, that's for sure. Glad Emily is back to herself. What a relief!

  5. Way to go both Pauls!! Daddy showing up at the first appt and rounding up lunch for Emily-no small task, believe me, and "other Paul" for so gently handling Emily's exam and effectively solving the problem! Poor Mama, maybe you can get hypnosis to erase the memories of that day!--or go surprise Ben and Cooper, seems to have therapeutic effect! So happy the trauma started and ended in one day [if it had to happen at all].
    BIG hugs!!! ~mimi

  9. WOW, I got just as scared as when I heard the story the first time. So happy to have Emily fixed so quickly! What a long day, but still able to chronicle all of it ;). Glad to know Emily will not be having her birthday party at a bounce house! Give that sweet girl a kiss and a BIG SQUEEZE from me. LOVE!!

  12. So glad that Miss Emily is using that left arm to ward off picture taking...Guess there will be no more 1-2-3 LIFT with Daddy and Grandpa or any rides on Aunt Sarah's zipline. But I bet I know someone that can fix you a sling!!!!I am so glad that everything turned out okay. My elbow was aching in sympathy...

    Love you!
