Baking 101

On Saturday, the 4th, Emily had her first lesson in baking - homemade graham crackers!  She was pretty excited to get started...
and spent some time getting acquainted with the ingredients.

Then it was time to begin. In a food processor (or mixer) combine 1 cup whole wheat flour,

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour,
(take a moment to be proud of yourself)
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar,
1/2 t salt, 1 t. cinnamon,
and 1 t. baking soda.
At this point check to make sure you haven't forgotten anything,
have a moment of silence,
and start pulsing!!
It's that simple!
Add 1/2 cup cubed and chilled butter to the mix and pulse until it resembles coarse meal.
Add 1/4 cup honey and 1/4 cup water...
and continue to mix until it all combines.

Remove and shape the dough into a flat disk and place between two pieces of parchment paper.  Roll dough out until 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into crackers or shapes and place cookies on a Silpat or parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven.

Since Emily was going to see some friends on Sunday we decided to make some special graham crackers for all of them.
Emily thought the whole experience was FABULOUS...
and has enjoyed eating them even more!

  1. It makes a TON of crackers depending on how large your shapes are. Thanks to Weelicious for this recipe and Natascha for knowing it would be one that Emily and I would NOT want to miss!!!

  2. The two most important ingredients: being proud of yourself and a moment of silence. Love it! I bet those graham crackers were delicious!
