Minor Surgery

Back on August 8th I noticed that Emily had a few splinters in her foot.  (She didn't point them out and never complained about any pain.)  The two on her heel concerned me the most so I decided to go after the middle one first while she was strapped in her highchair and Daddy was there to hold her foot still.
It didn't go very well and her crying and thrashing was too much to continue on so I aborted the mission and hoped that she would naturally reject the foreign bodies.  No such luck, by the 17th her foot looked like this...
and when I "offhandedly" mentioned them to my doctor she said the big one was infected and that she would take them out for us... no need to make a separate appt with a pediatrician.  :)
Before the torture began I made Emily comfortable on the table and was checking her over.
I don't have any pictures of what came next.  Picture Emily still on that table being held down by Paul, me, and two nurses while a doctor stuck a needle in her foot and then squeezed about a pint of blood out (okay, I may have exaggerated the blood amount) - that sucker was in DEEP.  Poor little girl was crying and crying and begging, "go home please," "all done," etc.  When it was all over though she was still polite enough to say thank you - which they all loved.
For her troubles she received TWO stickers - Nemo and a princess (Snow White) - she was pretty excited!  But, she didn't really want to be photographed.
On the way home we grabbed lunch and made sure to get Emily a special treat.  It was her first milkshake  - she just called it her milk.
For nap I taped the Band-Aids on like this (still not wanting to be in any pictures)...
and she had to take her first antibiotics for the infection.
When the bandaids came off Emily was ready to pose...

and she took a nice long bubble bath - just as the doctor ordered.
Her foot is healing nicely and now when she plays outside... she wears shoes!!

  1. Poor little baby! I know, it's equally traumatic for the parents to watch also. So glad that she is doing better now!

  4. My poor baby! I feel lightheaded every time I imagine the scene of her restrained and wailing! The pre-nap picture with the friends hiding her cracks me up!

  8. P.S. I don't know if I was channelling Emily today or what, but when I opened the back gate I got a palmful of splinters! Ouch!

  9. Oh my! Those were some big splinters! She was a very big girl and so glad that it is healing nicely. Next time try vaseline on the splinter area covered with a bandaid overnight, it might actually be drawn out in the AM. This was an old remedy of Grandma Flossie's!
