Bit by bit our little Emily is growing up. The next step in her journey... potty training. I must say, I don't really care about diapers. I would be fine with her staying in them a while longer. The issue is that there is a little one on the way and potty training while Emily is adjusting to a sibling just isn't a great idea. Her pediatrician agreed that now is the time!
So, last Thursday we started the process. Of course we have had the potty for months, we have talked about it many times, and Emily has even had some successes, but this was the real deal. I didn't read any books and didn't do much prep but I did decide to do some variation of someone's method about Emily teaching a baby doll to use the potty first. First thing Thursday morning Emily and I started training her doll, Lourdes, to use the potty. Lourdes, for the record, did REALLY well and boy did she have to use that potty A LOT!!! That afternoon Emily and I were shopping in Target when she spotted some cookies that she wanted to bake. I told her that would be a great idea, we can bake them when she uses the potty like Lourdes. Well, we all know how Emily loves to bake and EAT cookies so when we got home she took care of her end of the bargain, was quite proud of herself...
The first thing she did was run down and tell Lourdes...
and the second was to bake some cookies!

Emily LOVES sprinkles...
and takes decorating the cookies very seriously.
She does also have a particular fondness for eating the "extra" ones (of which there are PLENTY) that don't land on a cookie.

That wasn't the end of the events for that night though. Emily chose to use the potty again that evening...
and was again THRILLED with herself!
This time though, she said that she needed to wear her big girl underwear and she was SO proud to show Daddy when he got home!

(OMG - "training pants" on my little girl's tush... love it!)
Since then things have continued to go well, I'd say. Friday was her first day in underwear and during the morning she had three accidents. She was pretty upset by the first one - hadn't ever experienced it running down her legs, etc. - and did stop herself each time and finished on the potty. But, I think she needed to feel it and know what I was talking about because the rest of Friday plus Saturday and Sunday she was accident free!
This morning she got caught up in her dancing and had another accident, which she was VERY upset about, but all in all she has had a great run and I am expecting it to continue!! Go Emily!
PS I am already so tired of talking about these bodily functions and I am sure not too many people really care to read about them. Next post... no potty!
Potty training is a huge deal which any mom can relate to so keep on posting about the potty. Way to go Emily! I'd have to say, if I'd known potty training was going to be so easy, I wouldn't have worried about it so much. But I do have to say, being diaper free/pull up free is GREAT for the budget and one less thing you have to worry about bringing along when you go out. We just always make sure Sophia goes potty before we go out. I think that was my biggest worry....being in the middle of Target and her saying she has to go potty. And you know what, it has happened and we hurried to the toilet and we made it with time to spare. :) The greatest part now is that Sophia actually goes by herself at home since we have the step stool in front of the toilet. I hope Emily keeps up the good work. And don't be surprised if she regresses when bittwo comes along. :)
ReplyDeleteGo Emily!! What a big girl going on the potty! I think you'll be glad you are documenting all Emily's growing up - even the potty. It will be fun to look back at it when you are going through the same thing with Bittwo!
ReplyDeleteAwesome job on the potty, Emily! I think you could teach Noah a thing or two (sigh). I think I'm going to try having him teach one of his stuffed friends how to use the potty this week (that's a good tip).
ReplyDeleteAwesome job Mom and Emily -- way to go!!!
ReplyDeleteHooray for the potty!!!! I guess she really is a big girl now!!! (Nicolas is also very excited for her)
ReplyDeleteWay to Go Emily! That's very exciting!!
ReplyDeleteWe have plans to start this in the next few months, have to admit, not looking forward to it. Hope my boys do as well as Emily did :)
What a big girl !
YAY Emily! :)
ReplyDeleteWell done, Emily (and mommy and daddy!)! It's all "a process" but worth it in "the end!"
ReplyDeleteWe are proud of you Emily! That is a big mile stone. Mike potty trained early and fast and thank goodness because ya might think much of diapers now, but having two at a time would be a nighmare!
